Know Your Waste – Prepare for Scotland’s Packaging Data Reporting Regulations of 2023

The Scottish Government has just announced new packaging waste data reporting regulations that will take effect in 2023. This is an important step towards achieving Scotland’s ambitious recycling targets and reducing the amount of packaging waste that ends up in landfill. The new regulations will require all businesses with an annual turnover of more than £2 million to report the amount of packaging they use and the amount of packaging waste they generate. This information will then be used to track progress towards Scotland’s recycling targets. The regulations will also require businesses to report the type of packaging they use. This will allow the Scottish Government to better understand the sources of packaging waste and identify areas where action needs to be taken. In addition to the new reporting requirements, businesses will also be required to take steps to reduce the amount of packaging they use. This could include reducing the amount of packaging used for products, or switching to more recyclable or compostable materials. The regulations are part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to achieving zero waste by 2045. This is a bold target and the new regulations are an important step in the right direction. By better understanding the sources of packaging waste and taking steps to reduce it, Scotland can make progress towards its ambitious goals.
